ABSTRACT
The lateral movement behavior of cement column in conjunction with Pre-Cast concrete as a permanent retaining system in the EGAT's reservoir at Wang Noi power plant during the construction of embankment and reservoir, was observed and them the excavation procedure was modified due to the large lateral movement of retaining wall. With the modification, the excavation was successfully completed even though failure at the embankment occurred at one section. From the measurement results of modified construction, it is seen that the lateral displacement was very small during the construction of embankment and increased once upon the construction of reservoir and would not stop unless water was filled in. The back analyses of excavation were carried out and their results were compared with the measurement ones to confirm the effectiveness of the improvement scheme. The failure behavior of embankment due to the excavation was also evaluated and could be likely concluded that one main reason is the increase of thickness of soft clay layer at that section.
